Everything you need to know about the difference between gutters and downspouts

What is a gutter?

A gutter is another type of steel profile that resembles the English letter U or C and consists of a web and two wings. The web of the gutter is perpendicular to the wings, and the wings are located on both sides of the web.

There are two types of gutters: simple and mesh. In the simple type, the web and wings are smooth and without holes. On the other hand, we see a mesh gutter, in which holes are embedded in the web and wings. The following are some of the uses of gutters:

Construction of columns

Construction of beams

Framing

Connection of beams to columns

Construction of bridges

Construction of machinery

Construction of metal shelves

These profiles have advantages such as high strength, variety in dimensions and thickness, weldability, etc.

Difference between corner and gutter

After introducing corner and gutter, in order to examine the difference between corner and gutter, the following can be mentioned:

Appearance

One of the differences between corner and gutter is in their appearance. In cross-section, corner has an L-shaped cross-section consisting of two perpendicular wings. On the other hand, gutter has a U or C-shaped cross-section consisting of three wings. There is a wide wing in the middle and two narrower wings on the sides of the gutter.

In terms of thickness, corners have wings of equal or unequal thickness, but gutters have equal wing thickness. Another difference between corner and gutter is in the size of the two. Corners are produced in different sizes with wing lengths of 3 to 20 centimeters and thicknesses of 3 to 35 millimeters. But gutters are made in different sizes with wing lengths of 30 to 400 mm and thicknesses of 2 to 16 mm.

Material

Another difference between angle and gutter is the material of these two profiles. Although most angles are made of iron, this group of profiles is produced in all kinds of materials. The most important types of angles include galvanized angles, plastic angles, PVC angles, steel angles, and MDF angles. On the other hand, the material of gutters is limited, and in most cases, this group of products is made of metal materials.

Difference in standards

Angle and gutters also differ in terms of production standards. The standard used for producing angles is the BS EN 10056 standard and the DIN 1022 standard. On the other hand, the standard used for the production of gutters is BS EN 10279 and DIN 1026.
